This pairing includes a beautiful decorative Suku mask and a decorative Bambara ram emulation. They were made of carved wood with pigments and natural fibers.Suku masks like this one are typically related to initation rites among young men of the village. These kinds of masks were often carved by the children themselves and worn upon the completion of their ceremonies.Bambara masks like this one celebrate the harvest and the animal spirits that preside over the Bambara's daily lives. This Bambara mask is likely a ram, danced as part of Bambaran'tomo and koro secret societies.As these decorative masks were made in the middle of the 20th century, they may have been produced in Ghana.Both masks are in good vintage condition. The Bambara ram mask had a break to one of the horns, which has been glued back together. Each mask shows signs of age and wear. The ram form mask is 15.5 x 12.75 x 7.25 (length x width x depth). The Suku mask is 20.5 x 20 (height x diameter), with a 9 long fringe.
