Condition:Good Additional: This is believed to be a Kifwebe mask originating from the Songye and Luba peoples of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It has a striated face with geometric shapes, a long head crest starting at the top of the head tapering to a triangular nose, a square mouth with an 'X', almond slit eyes, and brown, white, red, and blue pigment. This mask is believed to be a female mask as it has a flattened round head crest and by the predominant use of white clay. Female masks exude beauty, tranquility and inner peace. They are not aggressive, unlike their male counterpart, either in their appearance or in their behavior. The dancer who wears the female mask displays more gentle and controlled movements and is assumed to be associated with reproduction ceremonies. The use of white on the mask symbolizes positive concepts such as purity and peace, the moon and light. The mask is also believed to have the capacity to heal by means of the supernatural force it was supposed to incorporate.
