Description : Egypt, Late Dynastic to Ptolemaic Period, ca. 664 to 30 BCE. A pair of hand-carved steatite scarabs covered in green glaze that are affixed to modern 14K+ gold earring settings. Each scarab has insectile topside features as well as inscribed hieroglyphs depicting a bird, a cobra, and a scarab within a cartouche border. Each earring setting is stamped with 14K. Size (each scarab): 0.56 L x 0.41 W (1.4 cm x 1 cm), (w/ gold setting): 1.16 H (2.9 cm), gold quality: 59.35% to 59.41% (equivalent to 14K+), total weight: 4.4 grams Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection, ex-collection of an influential family, Washington, DC, USA from the 1990s and earlier All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. Condition report : Wearable as shown and constructed in modern times. Scarabs are ancient, gold settings are modern. Scarabs have minor abrasions, light encrustations, and softening to some inscribed hieroglyphs, otherwise intact and very good. Nice preservation to green glaze.
