As described by Nicklin (personal communication: 2001), this a fine example of a style of face mask from Idoma, eastern Ejagham region. It is less naturalistic in style than many of the skin-covered masks of the region, and suggestive of the style of the Cross River monoliths now attributed to the Bakor (see Allison 1968). Hide ears are often symbolic of the power of the elephant, and used in regulatory societies. This fine old mask is unusual for the presence of the elaborate headdress which still remains intact.
