Description : A fine and rare Bokyi face mask the central oval wooden face pierced around the rim for attachment and framed by large circular leather ear flaps with indigenous restoration and the remains of a cowrie shell motif, the face with dramatic features highlighted by the cowrie shells affixed to the eyes and nose, and decorated by deeply incised striated markings and raised scarification, fine encrusted blackened patina with kaolin in the highlights. height 11 1/2 in. (29.2 cm.) Provenance: Morris Pinto, Geneva Carlo Monzino Collection Published: Nicklin and Salmons, 'Cross River Art Styles', African Art, 1984: 41, figure 36 Vogel 1986: figure 86 Exhibited: New York, The Center for African Art, African Aesthetics, 7 May-7 September 1986 As described by Nicklin (personal communication: 2001), this a fine example of a style of face mask from Idoma, eastern Ejagham region. It is less naturalistic in style than many of the skin-covered masks of the region, and suggestive of the style of the Cross River monoliths now attributed to the Bakor (see Allison 1968). Hide ears are often symbolic of the power of the elephant, and used in regulatory societies. This fine old mask is unusual for the presence of the elaborate headdress which still remains intact.
