Note : The Star of the West is regarded as the oldest operating bar in Kimberley, dating as far back as the 1870s. It catered for workers in the Kimberley mines. Named after a famous steamship built for Cornelius Vanderbilt, launched in 1852 in New York, that played an important role in the American Civil War. It is a replica of the Star of the West in Port Fairy, Melbourne which was built in the Georgian style in 1856 by John Taylor, a hotel entrepreneur. When Meyer painted this scene, he lived a Smitswinkeldrift, near Kimberley.
