Douglas Portway (1922-1993) Untitled signed and dated '91 mixed media 74 x 54cm. Biography: Born in Johannesburg, he began painting and exhibiting in his native South Africa. After a solo exhibition in 1945 he was awarded a travel grant to the USA. In 1956 he travelled throughout Europe and settled in Ibiza in 1959 where he remained for 7 years. During this time he had solo exhibitions in Paris, London and South Africa. In 1967 Portway moved to St Ives in Cornwall and began a long association with the Marjorie Parr Gallery exhibiting in New York, Chicago, London, Basel and St Ives. In the 1980s he bought a house in the Dordogne and moved from St Ives to Bristol, travelling between the two. He was a prolific loner whose figurative and abstract works showed technical mastery, having an erotic element being influenced by Klee, Zen and Jung. Douglas Portway died in the Dordogne in 1993. Memorial retrospectives were held at The Gallery Gilbert, Dorchester in 1997 and 1998. ,1945
