Note : Notes: Stimela, written across the shirt of the minor in this work by Bambo Sibiya, translates to ‘coal train’ and is reminiscent of the song of the same title by the prolific jazz artist Hugh Masekela. Both the song and the painting grapple with the violence of the South African mining industry, especially during the apartheid years. The decorative accents on the shirt and background are reminiscent of Sibiya’s Swankers series, which delved into the fashion and music subculture that emerged within that time. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this lot will benefit art students on Feenix.org, an online fundraising platform that connects students and communities to fundraise towards achieving debt-free tertiary education.
