The two, on round plinths standing female ‘Ibeji’- figures wear high, carved hairstyles and belly and face tattoos. ‘Ere Ibedji’-figures are commissions of a carver on the occasion of a twin birth and then placed in the family shrine. The manufactured figures always correspond to the sex of the child and can fulfill several functions. Often they are used after birth as an offering to Orisha Ibedji, the twin god. Women who want twins, also order these carved figures. They can also capture the departed soul of a child. The figures is great attention paid, they are regularly fed with dishes, clothed and adorned and some of them are rubbed with redwood powder (‘Osun’).The pair of figures is in very good condition with minimal signs of age and wear. There is minimal flaking of the wood on the back can be seen, at on figure the base is being fragmented. The red-brown patina probably points out that the figures are rubbed in redwood powder. The heights are 27 cm and 25.5 cm. (asi)Literatur: Hrsg. H. Jantzen u. L. BertschSJ, Doppel - Leben Ibeji Zwillingsfiguren der Yoruba (Hirmer 1993) p. 88 u.98 (text).
