Dimensione : haut. 49 cmNote : Figurant parmi les plus rares masques d'Océanie, les masques faciaux à tenon du sud Pentecôte, aux traits grotesques, sculptés dans un bois lourd, sont appelés tjubwan. Si leur fonction exacte demeure inconnue, on sait qu'ils sont portés maintenus par le danseur non costumé, lors de rituels évoquant les liens entre les hommes et les tubercules d'igname (K. Huffman, 1996, p. 24-25).A rapprocher stylistiquement:- du masque conservé au Musée d'ethnographie de Genève (n° 20937), collecté en1946, ancienne collection PierreLugeon (illustré dans K. Huffman, 1996 : 25, fig. 31),- du masque de la collection Helena Rubinstein (The Helena Rubinstein Collection,African and Oceanic Art, Parke-Bernet, New York, avril 1966, no 258 p. 244)- de celui du Linden Museum (A.J.P. Meyer, 1995, no 18 p. 36).Among the rarest masks of Oceania, the facial masks from the southern region of Pentecost Island, with a handle and grotesque features, carved from dense wood, are known as tjubwan. It is known that non-costumed dancers held them during rituals symbolising the links between men and yams the fundamental sustenance of the people. (K.
