They can be male or female and are sometimes represented with wings. While in ancient Egypt the sphinx was a symbol of the kings, it was considered as a female, often cruel demoness of death by the ancient Greeks. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the sphinx was often used as a symbol for the enigmatic woman or thefemme fatale. Those two latter remarks can be found by looking at offered pair of majestic sphinxes. The pronouncedly rendered chest areas as well as their nudity emphasize the voluptuous femininity of the sphinxes and characterize them asfemme fatales. Condition:Both sphinxes are in a predominately original condition with minimal restorations and chips. The dimensions per sculpture measure 61 x 29 x 60 cm.
