Descrizione : **Originally Listed At $200** Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba, ca. mid 20th century CE. A hand-carved and painted Egungun headdress depicting a bearded visage with very high pointed rabbit-like ears. Egungun masks are traditionally used to honor male ancestors. Although each mask is given an individual name, it does not actually refer to a specific member of one's lineage. Instead Egungun masks are associated with a collective understanding or force generated by the ancestral spirits. During an annual festival, all of the Egungun appear to celebrate the deceased with a joyous celebration. It is believed that ancestors bless the living descendants and bring about good health, settle arguments, reinforce morality, and rid the community of witchcraft.
