It shares stylistic elements of a number of different peoples of Gabon, Cameroon, or the Republic of Congo (People's Republic of Congo).ÊÊIt comes from a region of stylistic interchange and intermingling of people over an extended period of time.ÊÊElongated faces are known among a number of people in this region including the Fang, the Kwele, as well as the Mahongwe. Masks among these various peoples appeared during initiations to validate and bring initiates into full membership of the men‰€™s Bwiti secret society or they acted to impose sanctions for social control.ÊThey also appear in funerals.
