Descrizione :  , Additional Information: There are few examples of Lengola carving in western collections. This large figure called Ubanga Nyama made of separate pieces of wood and then pegged together are very rare to find. The Lengola who live on the banks of the Congo River construct their lives around a semi-secret society known as Bukota that exercises social control over Lengola life punishing malefactors and witches and initiating boys into adult society. This wonderfully carved figure is an ancestor figure and was used in various ceremonies including at the funeral of Bukota dignitaries and during the rites of circumcision and initiation. The figure shows some influence from their neighbors the Lega from whom they have taken the heart shaped face. This is an extraordinary example of the Lengola carver depicting the male form in abstract interpretation. The face is particularly exciting in its elongated and highly abstracted shape. This is a well-carved sculpture with some age and would add a unique piece of art in any collection.  ,  ,
