Descrizione : Roman Egypt, ca. 1st century CE. This is a deep red carnelian oval ringstone with a delicately engraved portrait of a female figure who may be either the goddess Isis or a priestess. Isis is sometimes given elements that relate her to Fortuna, the goddess of fortune and luck to the Romans, the mixture of goddesses and their attributes gives us an idea of the rich cultural milieu that existed in the central and eastern Mediterranean during this dynamic period. People chose the deity or the attributes of similar deities who they thought could bring them what they wanted, or who they identified with, and religion seems to have been fluid rather than dogmatic. This is a beautiful piece that would look lovely placed into a modern ring setting.
