Descrizione : Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Hemba People, ca. late 19th to early 20th century. Like much African art on the market today, this style of mask has seen its fair share of fakery. This piece is absolutely guaranteed to be authentic, tribally used and early. This Hemba mask, whose name means chimpanzee-human, appears at funerals and may also serve protective functions. The reference to the chimpanzee is not a positive one, for Hemba do not admire this animal, but rather regard it as one that can be aggressive and predatory toward people. The mask is worn on the head so that the masquerader looks out of the mouth. Note: It has a ritual grigri application on the face of the mask plus patina on the forehead from ritual oil rubbing. A gorgeous and early example! Custom stand. Size: 8.75 H (22.2 cm)
Provenance: Ex - Jean-Pierre Hallet, Malibu, CA acquired in situ around 1970
