Descrizione : ANCIENT NEAR EAST. Late Bronze to Early Iron Age, circa 1200-900 BCE. Set of five Luristan weapons. Expertly mounted on a custom acrylic stand 19 inches (48 cm) long, the set includes: (1) A Luristan short sword, 17.5 inches (44/5 cm) in length, with a triangular blade with midrib and a solid bronze handle with flaring pommel, (2) a spike-butted axe head, 8 inches (20.3 cm) long, with flaring blade and socket terminating in four spikes, (3-5) three tanged arrow and/or javelin heads, of differing shapes, between 4 and 4.5 inches (10-11.5 cm) in length. For sword and axe head, see Moorey, page 41, plate 6 (axe) and page 55, plate 23 (sword). All intact with no discernable repairs, with green patina and varying amounts of earthen encrustation. An attractive set artfully displayed. From the Barakat Biblical Collection, acquired and imported prior to 1982. The Lorestan Province of west-central Iran was once home to a large population of skilled metalsmiths who worked mainly in bronze, well past the onset of the Iron Age in circa 1200-1000 BCE. This region, called Luristan by excavators starting in the early 1900s, became the primary arms factory of the Ancient Near East, and their distinctive bronze weaponry was found from Egypt to Anatolia and all parts between. All of the Old Testament wars would have been conducted largely with Luristan swords, spearheads and axes like the ones seen here, supplementing the population of locally made weaponry.
