Descrizione : with short neck and horizontal rim, two monkeys in relief, both wearing collars and with their arms outstretched and legs bent, their tails curling around the base of the pot, 5.7 cm. (2 1/4 in.) Exhibited: The NY Carlsberg Glyptotek, Copenhagen, 1974-1996 Anhydrite or 'blue marble' as it is sometimes called, is a soft attractive translucent stone related to gypsum. It was used particularly during the Middle Kingdom to make small cosmetic vessels such as this one. The monkey in Egyptian art was often depicted as a symbol of female sexuality which may be why they decorated vessels used for kohl and other cosmetics. For two similar examples (one in the Bristol Museum, the other in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge) see J. Bourriau, Pharaohs and Mortals. Egyptian art in the Middle Kingdom, exhibition catalogue, Cambridge, 1988, p. 142, no. 144a & b. For another, see Sotheby & Co., London, Antiquities Sale, 10th June 1947, lot 74.
