Descrizione : singular undulating brow and domed forehead, the whole surmounted by a disc-shaped seat inset with numerous metal tacks; aged dark brown patina. Height 14 1/4 in. (36.2 cm.) Literature: Hersey, African Tribal Art, 1978, figure 109. De Sousberghe (1958:111-113) mentions that while stools were sculpted in great numbers amongst the Pende, few are found in museums or private collections. He feels this is due to the fact that these objects were buried with their owners. Both the stool and the small chair were important to everyday life and, therefore, accompanied the individual into the next world. The form of the animal as caryatid is typical of those stools and survives to this day. As Emil Torday, an early explorer of the Belgian Congo, stated in his discussion of the Pende, a chief never sat on the ground, but on a stool, the support of which was (frequently) sculpted to represent a hippo, elephant or antelope.
