Titolo : A Hellenistic Parcel-Gilt Silver Repoussé Roundel In The Form Of The Bust Of Isis Myrionymos
Note : Published:Christie's London, Fine Antiquities, Wednesday, 13 December 1995, lot 246The exact function of this roundel is not known but it is likely that it adorned the tondo of aHellenistic bowl, cf. D.E. Strong, Greek and Roman Gold and Silver Plate, (London 1966), pls.36A-37B. For similar depictions of Isis wearing the so-called 'Libyan locks' and knotted cloaks, cf. Exhibition catalogue, Cleopatra's Egypt, (Brooklyn 1988), cat.101, pp.206-7, pl.XXVIIIThis syncretic deity, adopted by the Greeks from the Egyptian Pantheon, appears here symbolising fertility with her lactating breast and the vegetation in her hair and adorning her sceptre. She represents the female principle of Nature. As Isis-Demeter she is the goddess of crops and vegetation, as Isis-Aphrodite, she conveys the joys of Spring, marriage and the fruitfulness of women and as Isis-Artemis, she is the Great Mother worshipped widely throughout Asia Minor. She is also Isis Pantocrateria, Isis 'all-ruling'. In this form of Isis myrionymos, she is known as she whose names cannot be numbered, where she is the only deity whose invocation meant that the number of her names was infinite.Goods subject to 5% import VAT at low rateBonhams 3, banditore, London, UK
