A Black Porphyry Jar, Predynastic Period, Nagada II, circa 3600-3200 B.C., with slightly offset base, pyriform body, cylindrical handles, and deeply undercut disk rim, the grayish-black stone with white quartz inclusions.

Descrizione : Height 7" in. (18.1 cm.) Published: Frederick Schultz Ancient Art, Egyptian Art, The Essential Object, New York, 1987, no. 2, illus. This jar is said to have been excavated at Ras Shamra, together with a group of gold, silver, and ivory objects all dating to no later than 1300 B.C., at which time it was over 1700 years old. It is possible it was brought to Ras Shamra by the Asiatic Hyksos, who ruled Egypt for a short period prior to the 18th Dynasty. Cf. Hayes, Scepter of Egypt, part I, fig. 15, for related examples; also compare Brooklyn Museum, Predynastic and Archaic Egypt, no. 123, a smaller but otherwise very similar jar.
