Descrizione : Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Middle Lualaba River region, Pende (Bapende) people, ca. mid 20th century CE. A striking wooden mask (panya ngombe) with a two-toned, heart-shaped face. The face is composed of two concave planes that meet along a jutting, broad nose. The mouth and eyes are dramatic, open forms, with tubular projections for the eyes and carved teeth in the mouth. There are scarification marks on the forehead and at the temples. A thick white pigment is still visible in many places. Size: 6.35 W x 8.5 H (16.1 cm x 21.6 cm), 15.4 H (39.1 cm) on included custom stand. The Pende people create masks that use interestingly-shaped planes and simplified forms, typically brightly colored, and use them in masquerades and initiations of secret societies. Each mask is thought to embody an ancestral force and, when worn, can act as a mediator with the spirit world.
