Descrizione : Africa, Cameroon, Bamileke Culture, ca. 4th quarter 19th/1st quarter 20th century. Very large and showy wooden mask from the grasslands of Cameroon. Bamileke helmet mask in exaggerated human form with long pointed chin, wide-open eyes and mouth and two rows of curls. In Cameroon every village and every town has its own group of so-called ‘juju dancers’. They perform during all important events and feasts, such as the enthronement of a new ‘king’ (or chief), the worshipping of ancestors, funeral rituals, etc. Dancers wear these head crest masks not on their face, but on their head.
