Descrizione : Africa, Cameroon, Bamileke Culture, ca. 4th quarter 19th/1st quarter 20th century. Very large and showy wooden mask from the grasslands of Cameroon. Bamileke helmet mask in exaggerated human form with long pointed chin, wide-open eyes and mouth and two rows of curls. In Cameroon every village and every town has its own group of so-called ‘juju dancers’. They perform during all important events and feasts, such as the enthronement of a new ‘king’ (or chief), the worshipping of ancestors, funeral rituals, etc. Dancers wear these head crest masks not on their face, but on their head. This is one such mask. An impressive example of large size! Size: 17 H (43.2 cm) Provenance: Ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, IL, acquired prior to 1970.
