Descrizione : [CARTER HOWARD]: (1874-1939) [CARTER HOWARD]: (1874-1939) English archaeologist and Egyptologist who discovered the Tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922. HALL HENRY: (1873-1930) English Egyptologist and historian. A.L.S., H. R. Hall, two pages, 8vo, Tewkesbury, 5th July n.y. (1931), to Howard Carter (‘Dear Carter’), on the printed stationery of the Swan Hotel. Hall hastily writes to ask Carter if he will let him ‘see the two Egyptian things again tomorrow morning’, clarifying that he will reach Paddington at approximately 10.15am ‘and will come straight to you on the chance of finding you in’. Hall further explains ‘You didn’t see Hill and myself the other day with the other members of the N.A.C.F. [National Art Collections Fund] C’tee because we couldn’t make anybody hear: we rang twice, and then went away thinking we must have made a mistake in the date. And then we heard that you and they had been there all the time!’ and adds ‘Hill will not I think have time to see them now, but I think I ought to come and see them again before discussing the matter with the N.A.C.F. I can’t quite make up my mind which I like best; but I think – the Rameses head. But where are we to find the money?’. In a postscript Hall states that the reason for his haste is that he will travel to Norway the following night and remain there until the end of the month. VG Carter acted as a part-time dealer in Egyptian antiquities for both collectors and museums and the source of a number of items in his personal collection is shrouded in controversy. Over a dozen pieces he owned were identified after Carter's death as having been taken by the Egyptologist from Tutankhamun's tomb without authorisation.
