Il lotto Lotto n° 55
Titolo : A CYCLADIC MARBLE FIGURE
Provenienza : Gabrielle Keiller collection (1908-1995), UK; acquired from B. C. Holland Inc., Chicago, 1981.
Note : CLASSICALPROPERTY FROM THE COLLECTION OF THE LATE GABRIELLE KEILLER (1908-1995) The first half of Gabrielle Keiller's life was dedicated to golf, the second to art. She played intensively and won many competitions until her husband of four years and golfing companion of not much longer, Alexander Keiller, died of cancer after which she never lifted a golf club again. Born Gabrille Ritchie in 1908, she lived with her family near Oakham in Rutland. She married and divorced twice before meeting archaeologist Alexander Keiller, sole heir to a Dundee marmalade firm. Alexander Keiller's personal collection included Egyptian antiquities, however he was passionate about Prehistoric archaeology and financed work on the Neolithic henge monument at Avebury. In 1938 he opened a museum of the Avebury excavations, later purchased by the National Trust. The contents of the museum were presented by Mrs Keiller after her husband's death to the Ministry of Public Buildings and Works, now English Heritage, who describe them in their handbook as 'one of the most important prehistoric archaeological collections in Britain'. They can be seen today in the museum which bears his name in Avebury. After her husband's death in 1955, Mrs Keiller volunteered in the British and Medieval Antiquities department at the British Museum and participated in many published studies. From around 1960 onwards, she began collecting modern art, focusing mainly on Dada and Surrealism. Her collection included works by Salvador Dalí, René Magritte, Lucien Freud, Edvard Munch, Man Ray, Joan Miró, Alberto Giacometti, Andy Warhol and Francis Bacon to name but a few. In 1988 Gabrielle Keiller bequeathed her 20th Century collection to the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, the most important gift made since it opened in 1960. Gabrielle Keiller purchased these three Cycladic works from B.C. Holland Inc., Chicago, in 1981, a fitting addition to her collection since it is in these Cycladic figures that we see the ethereal beauty and pared-down treatment of the human form which inspired so many of the modern artists of the early 20th Century.A CYCLADIC MARBLE FIGURE ATTRIBUTED TO THE GOULANDRIS SCULPTOR, LATE SPEDOS VARIETY, CIRCA 2500 B.C.With a lyre-shaped head, rounded chin, long triangular shaped nose, the slightly flaring neck off-set and with a groove at front and around back of head, the body with broad slanting shoulders, the slender schematic forearms folded beneath the small breasts, the legs with deep cleft at front and back13¼ in.
