Notes : COLLECTOR'S NOTE Athi-Patra Ruga was recently an artist-in-residence at the Irma Stern Museum in Cape Town. Here, he created new works in response to some of Stern’s most iconic paintings, which culminated in the exhibition, Athi & Irma …An Intervention, at the Museum in 2022.In 2018 Ruga held a solo exhibition, Of Gods, Rainbows and Omissions at Somerset House in LondonThe artist has been included in important institutional group shows including Crossing Night: Regional Identities x Global Context (2019) at the MOCAD (The Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit) in Michigan, The Film Will Always Be You: South African Artists on Screen (2015) at the Tate Modern in London, Public Intimacy (2014) at the SFMOMA, San Francisco, A Tribute to Photography (2011) at the Primo Marella Gallery, Milan, Italy and This is not Africa - Unlearn what you have learned (2021) at the ARoS Museum in Denmark.Ruga’s work was featured in the Venice Biennale in 2013 and in 2015 a solo performance, The Elder of Azania, was a part of the Johannesburg Pavilion at the 56th Venice Biennale.• The artist was awarded the Seydou Keïta Prize (Grand Prize) of Les Rencontres de Bamako by the Malian Ministry of Culture in 2017. • Ruga’s artworks have been seen in numerous international Art Fairs including 1-54 London (2023, 2022); Expo Chicago (2023,2022); Miart (2022) and Art Rotterdam (2022). COLLECTIONS The artist is represented in local and international collections, notably, Iziko South African National Gallery, Cape Town; Museion Bolzano, Bolzano and The Wedge Collection, Toronto.
