He studied fine arts at the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. After his studies, he refused conscription into the South African Defence Force. To avoid arrest for his dissent he fled to New York, where he worked as a studio assistant to Richard Prince, returning to South Africa only after the release of Nelson Mandela from prison in February 1990. His work often refers to the political issues and the violence of his country of birth. Over the years Geers has examined the increment of violence in the mass media and how images of violence have become banalized through media-centric methods of representation. In recent years Geers has participated in major group shows such as documenta XI, The Carnegie International and the biennials in Venice, Munster, Berlin, Johannesburg and Taipei.
