Notes : The present work is part of a series created by Sam Nhlengethwa ahead of a 2019 exhibition that explored the artist's relationship with and impressions of Johannesburg's built environment. Never living within the city—Nhlengethwa was born in Springs and raised in Ratanda, Heidelberg, east of Johannesburg—the artist nonetheless has spent considerable time working in and around Joburg. For 25 years, he had a workspace at the Bag Factory in Fordsburg and also a studio at August House in Doornfontein. In works like "View of Transwerke" (from Constitution Hill), Nhlengethwa focuses on buildings and streets that reflect "his" city and the sights and reflections that have personally impacted him.
