Condition_report : This unlined, heavily painted work is executed on a fairly thin, pre-primed linen fabric. The fabric is mounted on a stretcher that has been both greatly keyed-out and expanded by a 3/8 inch piece of wood attached to the upper-most stretcher member. Despite this, the fabric support remains slightly slack. Slight bulges are visible along the upper edge. The paint layer exhibits both drying and mechanical crackle. The paint is thickly applied in many layers and the support is no longer strong enough to completely and safely support the painting. Stress in the paint layer is relieved by cracking and some of these cracks are starting to lift. At present, paint loss is relatively minor and confined to one line of loss in the left figure (V: 6 inches H: 9-12 inches measured from the lower left corner) and a small loss in the right figure (V: 5 1/4 inches H: 17 1/2 inches measured from the lower left corner.) Further flaking is incipient and the painting should be brought to a professional conservator. Examination in UV light indicates that the painting is unvarnished and that there are neither previous losses nor any retouching. Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Interested bidders are strongly encouraged to request a condition report on any lots upon which they intend to bid, prior to placing a bid. All transactions are governed by Freeman's Conditions of Sale.
