Originally coming from a surrealist background, Younan and Kamel went on to pioneer Egyptian abstract art. Whilst Younan used strange colours and jagged forms to create curiously distorted abstract compositions, in Fouad Kamel's more fluid compositions, the broad gestural strokes demonstrate the free movement of the artist's hand, an expression of his rebellion against the establishment and the traditional artistic forms. His abstract work went through three phases- black, blue and red. His thick colours and dramatic curvilinear lines mark a dramatic depature from previous schools of painting in Egypt- the visual expression of his revolutionary leanings.
