Notes : The cells depicted in Goldblatt's image are the twenty-six isolation cells and lavatory in the former Number Four prison in the 'Old Fort' at Constitution Hill in Johannesburg. The Fort was originally built as a prison by the Boers in 1893 for white male prisoners, both political and common law. Nelson Mandela was held there in 1956 before the Treason Trial and again after his arrest in 1962. The Old Fort precinct now houses South Africa's Constitutional Court.
