Notes : Unwilling to submit to British colonial rule with its liberalisation of markets, egalitarian treatment of servants and freeing of slaves, thousands of Afrikaners emigrated from the Cape between 1834 and 1845 in what became known as the Great Trek. Karel Landman, who farmed in this area until 1837, became a leader in that movement.
