Consulter la cote et le prix de Wonderful African Wooden Ibeji Twin Figure

Description : West Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. A twin Ere Ibeji figure, the Igbomina type, standing upon an integral round base, hand carved to represent a deceased twin and elaborately adorned with beaded strands around her neck, waist, and left wrist (a twisted rope strand also adorns this wrist), long vertical scarification marks along the left side of the torso, and a fancy plaited coiffure. The sex of this figure is somewhat ambiguous as it possesses small breasts as well as male genitalia. According to the Yoruba, twin effigies like the one featured here are believed to influence the daily lives of family members. As such, they are traditionally honored with prayers and libations. A strong example with a shiny patina and nice remains of red cinnabar. Size: 10.375 H (26.4 cm) For a bit more context, Ibeji is an orisha, a holy spirit in the Yoruba religion. Twins are thought to possess magical properties in the Yoruba culture, and are protected by the sacred deity Shango. When a twin passes away, this is believed to bring on bad luck for the parents, families and connected communities. So an ibeji twin figure is created to represent the deceased and be cared for by the community. Provenance: Ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, IL, acquired prior to 1970.
