Consulter la cote et le prix de Toma Mask Loma Landai, second half 20th cen

Description : Additional Information: , An elongated Toma mask made out of dense and heavy wood, surmounted by two short carved horn and a projectile in the middle.  ,The large forehead has plaited vegetal fibers covered with sacrificial materials and  ,displayed in a circle. The same vegetal fibers are places around the face . ,  , A large forehead cut away sharply just above the eyes is a trademark of the Toma masks.  ,Known as Landai such masks were  ,used at the initiation ceremony of boys, where it symbolically devours Poro Society candidates at the end of their initiation, after which they are revived and become full members of the society. The Toma also known as Loma are a small group (200,000 people) found in Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia. Most of their ceremonies revolve around the secret Poro society. Among the Loma people of Liberia who are identified as the Toma in Guinea, the men’s secret society known as Poro is the primary association for the initiation of all males and the means whereby social control is exercised. Powerful leaders of this secret society have badges of office and certain symbols reserved to them to influence initiates. Masks such as this were worn horizontally on the head and held by the projecting horns. Some of these horizontal masks appeared during initiations of youths into manhood while others were held in the men’s secret Poro Society precinct in the ‘bush’ where they were kept hidden from the uninitiated.
