Frank Frazetta had high hopes for his Thun'da gig, but a dispute with editor Ray Krank left Fritz so aggravated that he bailed out on Thun'da after a single issue. Bob Powell was brought in to pinch hit, and the title ran for five more issues, minus the wild energy and inventiveness that made the first ish such a smash. Frazetta handled the inevitable racial stereotyping prevalent in pre-Code jungle mags with a trickster's approach, playing it as an over-the-top burlesque of racism. Bob Powell's approach was blunter and more direct. Powell's cover depicts an African warrior with his spear poised over a captive white gal's privates, a startling image of implied sexual violence that anticipates Lee Elias's cover to Black Cat Mystery #43, published a year later, featuring an African seemingly about to ram his spear up a white gal's bum (see lot 28). According to one critic, this kind of imagery invoked racial fears of an uncontrollable black man ravishing a helpless white woman, while whitewashing historical realities: In the history of American race relations, especially during slavery, black women were victims of white rapes, a scenario that gets reversed in pre-Code jungle mags.
