Description : Title: The Pyramids of Gizeh from Actual Survey and Admeasurement Author: John Shae Perring - John Shae Perring was a British engineer, anthropologist and Egyptologist, most notable for his work excavating and documenting Egyptian pyramids. In the field of Egyptology his work is fairly obscure and his anthropological work is even more obscure. (Information courtesy of Wikipedia) Publisher: James Fraser City: London Year: 1840 Binding Style: Other - see description Number of Volumes: 3 Full Set: Yes Width: 17.5 Height: 24 Book Details: In 1837 Perring and British archaeologist Richard William Howard Vyse began excavating at Giza - they were later joined by Giovanni Battista Caviglia. They used gunpowder to force their way into several monuments and then to reach hidden chambers within them, such as the burial chamber of the pyramid of Menkaure, documenting them as they went. When Caviglia left the team to work independently, Perring became Vyse's assistant and when Vyse himself left for England in 1837 Perring continued the excavation with Vyse's financial support. As part of his work Perring created several maps, plans and cross-sections of the pyramids at Abu Roasch, Gizeh, Abusir, Saqqara and Dahshur. He was the first to explore the interior of the Pyramid of Userkaf at Saqqara in 1839, through a robber's tunnel first discovered by Orazio Marucchi in 1831. Perring's work resulted in his three-volume The Pyramids of Gizeh, published in 1839 to 1842. Vyse also published Perring's sketches in the third volume of his own three-part work Appendix to Operations carried on at the Pyramids of Gizeh in 1837. (Information courtesy of Wikipedia) Condition / Notes: This is the three-volume set of Perring's The Pyramids of Gizeh, originally bound as one. This antique volume is largely disbound, and is lacking its boards and spine cover. The pages/plates show moderate to significant condition issues, including chipping, age toning, and smudging/soiling. This wear is most evident in the margins, but a number of the plates exhibit moderate foxing and age toning that affects the image. This work is profusely illustrated by E.J. Andrews, with lithographs of pyramids, including detailed cross-sections, site maps, interior artwork/hieroglyphs, and striking views. Some of the lithographs are partially colored. Of the 56 original double-page plates, 49 are present in this copy (lacking are numbers 12-15 in the first volume, plate 2 in the third part of the second volume, and plates 1 and 2 in the fourth part of the second volume). It should be noted that the fifth plate in the first part of the second volume is slightly smaller than the others and is possibly from another edition of the book. In addition, there are two double-page maps. For lots which include only books, our shipping charge applies to any address within the fifty United States.
