Consulter la cote et le prix de Senufo Tall Carved Wood Female Altar Figure

Description : In Senufo societies of the Ivory Coast, Africa, male dominated poro and female dominated sandogo associations commit themselves to the physical and spiritual well-being of their communities. Although divination in northern Cote d'Ivoire is most often associated with sandogo women, not all diviners are members of the organization. Senior poro members and other enterprising men also establish divination practices. Sculptures on divination altars reflect the status, prestige, and skill of their owners and appeal to spiritual intermediaries.Female figures typically stand taller than their male companions, reflecting an aesthetic choice common in Senufo sculpture. Artists elevate the stature of the female form to honor women and allude to their maternal roles in the poro initiation cycle that transforms uninitiated boys into productive adults. This exquisite piece was carved in the early to mid-20th century. The height of this figure suggests that it served as a spirit figure on an altar belonging to a senior member of poro. It features original rope accents on the neck and arms, and is carved with a bowl on its head to hold magical elements.Provenance:These pieces were collected over a period of several decades out of collections from America and throughout Europe, including France, Germany, Belgium, and Amsterdam beginning in the early 1960s. The items in this collection have been identified by George Mack, former director of the Arizona African Art Museum.Pick up this fantastic piece for your collection today!Measures approximately 38 x 6 with a total weight of 10 lbs.
