Description : Sebah, J. Pascal: Portraits of inhabitants of the Ottoman Empire Attractive portrait album showing a wide range of people of the Ottoman Empire. Circa 1870s/1880s. 104 carte-de-visite albumen prints and 13 cabinet albumen prints each with photographer's logo, address and name and most titled and numbered in ink in contemporary hand on mount verso, inserted in album window mat boards (damaged), bound in contemporary leather album (damaged, cover loose, spine cracked). This extensive collection of portraits documents the immense influence of the Ottoman Empire in the Arabian, African, Near East and Balkan countries. It shows various inhabitants such as Arabian, African, Armenian, Bulgarian, Serbian, Montenegrin, Albanian, Greek, Turkish, Egyptian and Jewish people in traditional costume, including many veiled and unveiled Turkish and other women (some with water pipe), a variety of occupational portraits and street sellers with their goods such as candles, fezes, fruit and vegetables, kitchen utensils, sweets and jams, carpets, pretzel sticks, yogurt and many others. Also includes portraits of Turkish, Persian, Greek and Armenian priests, several portraits of Dervish, Zeibek, Circassian and Bashi-bazouk warriors with weapons and traditional dress, a high-ranking Turkish general as well as black slaves and eunuchs. There is also a portrait of Sultan Abdülaziz (1830 - 1876) circa 1874. These portraits are rare and important documents of Sebah's work as he lost most of his negatives in a fire in 1881, especially those of Istanbul from the 1860s - 1870s. None of these images are published in Öztuncay. - Some slightly faded, some with light foxing spots, especially in upper portion, a few with light scuff marks, otherwise most in good to very good condition.
