Description : Details: Rare Vintage Hand Carved AFRICAN IMPALA ANTELOPE SCULPTURE Bobo Style Wood Headdress with Decorated Red Black and Blue Pigmented Geometric Patterns. This lot features a rare vintage hand carved African Antelope sculpture. The sculpture may be part of a Bobo or Bwa style headdress or mask and has a small cut out on the bottom for mounting to a headdress or modern steel display stand. Tribal representations of the African antelope, are generally associated with agricultural rituals often preformed by farmers to honor Ci Wara (a divine half mortal half animal being from Bamana mythology) and promote a prosperous harvest. The sculpture features an elegant series of elongated shapes, with up swept ears, thin nearly vertical horns and a long slightly down turned muzzle. Additionally the sculpture is covered in pigmented geometric patterns of red, blue, and black, which create an interesting contrast between the flowing natural lines of the antelope and the staccato linear interruptions of the tribal designs.
