Description : Ca. 700-600 BC. A lower fragment of a votive helmet, which has a rich decoration with golden laminae. No precise parallels are known for this object. Originally, the intact helmet must have been conical in shape, like the examples worn by the votive terracotta statues of warriors found in the sanctuary of Ayia Irini on the island of Cyprus, preserved in the Archaeological Museum of Nicosia. It is, therefore, possible that the present artefact comes from a bronze statuette similar to the terracotta statues mentioned above. The embossed gold thin plate, with figures of marching felines and the grotesque mask inspired by the face of the Egyptian god Bes, that decorate the ‘visor’ and palmettes that decorate the sides and back of the bronze fragment, are comparable in style to an example of the Phoenician-Cypriot art of the Orientalizing period.
