Consulter la cote et le prix de Pende Wood, Rattan, & Burlap Mask

Description : Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, western Pende peoples, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A remarkable, hand-carved wooden mask from the Pende people, who are known for their intricate masks made for initiation rituals and youth education. Crowned by an elaborate, 3-horned diadem of wrapped rattan atop burlap, the fascinating visage presents a sweeping, arched brow, large, downturned eyes hooded by heavy, projecting lids, a wide nose with drilled nostrils, and full lips, gently parted to reveal 2 rows of jagged teeth. Ceremonial scarification marks arranged in triangular patterns are carved in relief on the forehead and cheeks, while double-pointed ears flank the expressive visage. A row of annular drill holes lines the periphery, allowing the vizard to be strapped to a costume and worn. Size: 7.2 W x 14 H (18.3 cm x 35.6 cm), 19.1 H (48.5 cm) on included custom stand.
