Description : Fine Luba Divining Instrument, Democratic Republic of the Congo kashekesheke Wood with polished dark brown patina Height 4 7/8in (12.4cm) Provenance Drs. Nicole & John Dintenfass Collection, New York James Stephenson African Art, New York American Private Collection Published Roberts, Mary Nooter & Allen F., Memory: Art and the Making of History, The Museum of African Art, New York, Prestel, 1996 p. 183, cat. # 78 As noted by Mary Nooter and Allen Roberts (Ibid.), ' Kashekesheke is one of the oldest forms of divination, a technique to reconstruct memories and personal histories for purposes of problem-solving. The diminutive sculpted wooden figure used for kashekesheke divination is called by the namer of the diviner's consulting spirit. The figure's form is dictated to the diviner in a dream by the spirit itself. But whether the ancestor is male or female, the sculpted figures are always considered female, even when abstracted or possessing only a head.' Exhibited New York, Memory: Art and the Making of History, The Museum of African Art, 2 February - 8 September 1996; Washington, D.C., National Museum of African Art, 30 October 1996 - 26 January 1997 The rich, lustrous patina on the kashekesheke presented here is indicative of its extensive amount of use within the culture, caused by continuous rubbing against a mat or the ground.
