Consulter la cote et le prix de Egyptian Predynastic Naqada Ii Marl Pottery Jar

Description : Ancient Egypt, Predynastic Period, Naqada II, ca. 3500 to 3200 BCE. A beautiful, hand-built marl pottery jar of compressed spherical form with a round but stable base, a broad body with a bulging midsection, a sloped shoulder with a pair of cylindrical suspension handles, and an everted ledge rim. Covered in a beige-tan ground hue, the exterior of the vessel is decorated with applied red-brown pigment that forms 8 large spirals around the body and base, 1 spiral on each handle, 5 sets of parallel wavy lines, and additional wavy lines atop the rim, the wavy lines perhaps represent waves or ripples along the waters of the Nile River. Size: 5 Diameter x 3.625 H (12.7 cm x 9.2 cm) Although there is very little evidence pertaining to kilns that would lead to a better understanding of firing techniques from the Naqada II period, an interesting article written by Masahiro Baba analyzes the pottery produced at Hierakonpolis to propose a reconstruction of these techniques. See this article entitled, Pottery production at Hierakonpolis during the Naqada II period: Toward a reconstruction of the firing technique, British Museum Studies in Ancient Egypt and Sudan 13 (2009): 1-23. Cf. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession numbers 42.5.12 and 10.176.119, The British Museum, museum number EA67430, and The Brooklyn Museum, accession number 07.447.440 Provenance: ex-John B.
