Description : West Africa, probably Ivory Coast (Cote d'Ivoire) or Mali, Senufo peoples, early 20th century CE. A huge wooden mask in the form of a warthog, with added details of leather and fur. The wood surface has been plastered over, with much of this plaster remaining, and there is an iron hook through his nose. He has fearsome tusks and teeth, and well-carved ears. This is a large and imposing mask! All Senufo art is made by specialist artisans, they create masks for use in societies and rituals relating to societies. Warthogs hold a special place in their art - the animals can destroy farm crops and their tusks are often the focus of Senufo art depicting them. They are included in helmet masks to protect the village from spiritual forces.
