Description : Western Africa, Liberia and Cote d'Ivoire, Dan peoples, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A wonderful gathering of three bi-planar, ovoid masks with pointed chins, pursed lips, prominent noses, broad foreheads, and recessed versos. One mask has faint eyes and a simple arching band across the forehead, one mask has a grooved bar across the brow, and the largest has various metal fetish studs hammered into the brow above the eyes. Each maskette exhibits a rich, smooth patina in varying shades of brown! Custom museum-quality display stands included. Size: 2.5 W x 4 H (6.4 cm x 10.2 cm), 6.5 H (16.5 cm) on included custom stand. Such maskettes were created to connect the owner with a specific spirit that is believed to offer guidance and protection, and such maskettes were oftentimes sewn on fabric clothing and stored in a leather pouch that is worn and carried by their owners during travels.
