Description : Egypt, Coptic culture, 1st to 8th century CE. A hand-carved ungulate or bovine bone idol of an abstract standing figure for use as a pendant and talisman. The bone tapers to slender, fused legs, incised linear waist, and arms to the sides. The head has a stylized and slightly zoomorphic appearance, circular owlish eyes, slender nose, and linear mouth and cleft chin. The forehead has a pierced suspension hole and tab like ears or cap protrude from the corners. The staring concentric circle eyes probably offered protection against the evil eye. Size: 3.75 L x 0.75 W (9.5 cm x 1.9 cm) Provenance: ex-John B. Kendrick II collection, Denver, Colorado, USA, acquired 1965 to 1990, John B. Kendrick II was that son of John B.
