Description : Chokwe Second half 20th. C. masks, hand carved out of solid wood, bear distinctive stylistic elements. The masks represent human heads and have slit eyes, sharp noses and broad lips. The dreadlocks are accomplished by hanging hollow pieces of Bamboo on strong strips of cloth, or sometimes leather. Scarifications are found on the forehead and cheeks and they are marks of beautification. The hair is made from rope, wood and cloth. In the past some masks played important roles in religious beliefs and institutional practices, and many other Chokwe masks have come to be used primarily for entertainment. The Chokwe people currently reside in Angola, Zambia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Condition good. H. 14'' W. 7''. D. 5'.
