Description : Details: This lot consists of the antique French engraving shown in the corresponding images. This hand-colored engraving, Le Chimborazo vu depuis le Plateau de Tapia, is from Alexander von Humboldt's Vues des Cordillères, et monumens des peuples indigènes de l'Amérique (first published in 1816). Shown in this image is Chimborazo with alpacas, a caravan of men, and cacti in the foreground. It is attributed to Thibaut, and engraved by Bouquet. Chimborazo is a currently inactive stratovolcano in the Cordillera Occidental range of the Andes. Its last known eruption is believed to have occurred around A.D. 550. With a peak elevation of 20,548 ft, Chimborazo is the highest mountain in Ecuador. Chimborazo is not the highest mountain by elevation above sea level, but its location along the equatorial bulge makes its summit the farthest point on the Earth's surface from the Earth's center.
