Consulter la cote et le prix de Bassa Carved Wood Female Maternity Figure

Description : The Bassa people occupy small, scattered villages in the geographic center of Liberia, cultivating rice and other crops. They have several female and male societies, including ''chu-den-zo'' and ''gela'' (pronounced ''geh-naw'') as well as secret societies like the ''Poro.'' Rather than having a centralized government or paramount chief, the Bassa depend on these societies to maintain order and strengthen social cohesion.Masks are the primary modes of expression for the Bassa, and figural sculptures such as this are very rare. This piece is a maternity figure, with a small child on the back. It features a beautiful and elaborate headdress and a string of red beads around the waist. This sculpture was crafted in the early to mid 20th century, possessing a fine patina with sacrificial encrustation and a strong muscular form.Provenance:These pieces were collected over a period of several decades out of collections from America and throughout Europe, including France, Germany, Belgium, and Amsterdam beginning in the early 1960s. The items in this collection have been identified by George Mack, former director of the Arizona African Art Museum.Add this fantastic Bassa sculpture to your collection today!Piece is in good condition for its age, showing signs of use with a very nice patina.Measures approximately 20.5 x 8.25 x 6.25 with a total weight of 5 lbs.
