Titre : Antique Works Of Art From Benin
Medium : Softcover bookDimensions : 12 x 9 in.Provenance : Augustus Pitt-Rivers, the first Inspector of Ancient Monuments in Great Britain, Etc., was a noted military leader, ethnographer, and archaeologist. In the very end of the 19th century, there was a British military punitive expedition into Benin City, which, according to Pitt-Rivers was a city of blood, full of disorder and sullied by the practices of human sacrifice. The British found a great quantity of Juju (Western African) artifacts and, as was customary for the Empire at this time, appropriated them. Many of them ended up in the hands of private buyers while a great number of them found their way to the British Museum. This book meticulously records this treasure trove of Benin cultural history.Condition report : Very good conditionSaskatchewan Network for Art Collecting, Salle de vente
